Born and growing up in Salisbury, Wiltshire in the UK, I found a love for films and TV at a young age. Due to influence from my dad, I would watch hours of Sci-Fi themed shows like Star Trek, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who, with him. So it is no surprise I have a love for the genre. Again thanks to my dad I also found interest in comics and as a result I do like a good Superhero based movie. I am getting tired however of the genre being dominated by male characters. When I reached my teens I found myself enjoying series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Charmed which I found myself enjoying for the metaphorical factor of the shows. How aspects represented real life struggles, for example in the series 4 episode of Buffy called "Fear" where after the 'Scooby Gang' had conquered their fears after a torturous maze Fear shows himself and turns out to be only 6 inches tall. The reason being when you conquer your fear it is actually a small thing.
As my life progressed my library of TV and Films has spread into practically every genre. I have also found more joy in finding a show where I can relate to a character or a situation more than simply having an big action packed film with little emotional impact along the way. I have also found that given the style and theme anime is a genre I can enjoy. I think what I enjoy about anime is simply how the creators can think massively outside the box and let their creative skills go wild.
I am also a contributor to the website Moviepilot where I post articles with over a million total reads over my 70 articles. Based on a variety of topics, from aspects of TV and film, news on upcoming releases and even the odd theory on where franchises could be going. My personal top 5 Movies and TV Programmes are:
Top 5 Movies.
5. Battle Royale.
This film give me chills every time I watch it. If you thought the Hunger Games was good, watch the original. This Japanese film shocked audiences with the premise of students having to kill their peers until only one remains. The way the film shows you during times of hardship a flash back to a characters happier memories really makes you connect with the students as you watch to horror unfold. Just simply the idea of being forced to kill is bad enough but when it is your friends it truly makes you question how strong would your bond with your friend be if it came down to it.
4. Saving Grace.
British humour at its finest is right here. Brenda Blethyn is simple superb as the widow forced to grow cannabis after her husband killing himself to avoid the truth of the sheer amount of debt he has gotten them into. Full of laugh that will make you sides hurt and lines that you will remember forever this movie shows how a film can be entertaining in multiple ways without requiring hundred of thousands in special effects. If you have not seen this British gem yet I suggest you add it to you must watch list.
3. X-Men: First Class
This was the X-Men film that did not make me rage as I saw my favourite comic book stories destroyed like the first 3 films. X-Men First Class escaped the rage simply due to the fact they told a story we have never had. It had always been referenced that Xavier and Magneto had built the school together but we had never seen it in the comics. With them using this area to create their own story any comic book fan could sit and enjoy this original story without sacrificing their childhood icons. There were faults in it for example Magneto shattering Emma Frosts Diamond form with some metal. But as far as the story goes it is one I think anyone can enjoy.
2. Avatar 3D
I first saw Avatar in 2D and thought, it was a good story and really enjoyed it. However as soon as I saw it in 3D it blew me away. It proved the 3D genre does work, but it has to be used on specific projects. The fact they also told a story so similar to parts of human history only having a different outcome than out history makes the film have even more of an impact. The graphics and cinematography are simply stunning and the designs of the world do not fail to amaze. I wish we had seen something from the water but I hear those are the plans for number 2 which does excite me. So if you think you have seen Avatar but only seen it in 2D I would say think again, watch again in 3D an you will be truly amazed.
1. Sliding Doors.
I suspect everyone is surprised a Sci-Fi is not topping my chart, were instead you find Sliding Doors. I love this film for the 'What if' story line. I think this film is brilliant in how it is showing how a minor change in your life can change everything but how some things are still destined. I think Gwenyth Paltrow did a brilliant job during the film making you laugh and cry all in 5 minutes of the film. The film also shows you how you can take charge of you life and make a new path for yourself or how you can keep accepting your life until a great big swap around the face wakes you up. This is a film I would definitely recommend.
Top 5 TV Programmes.
5. Family Guy.
I like this series simply because it still does what it set out to do in its inception, shock people. The fact that no one is safe from a Family Guy joke be that ethnicity, gender, sexuality or even lifestyle Family Guy will go there. The characters different personalities also help, giving variation on episodes depending on the focal character/s. One example of how no one is safe from Family Guy humour is the fact that when the episode is going to focus on the daughter Meg, Peter her father will break the 4th dimension and tell the audience it is OK to change the channel cos it's going to be a Meg episode. Another genius part about Family Guy is how the have handled the family dog Brain. The fact he acts like a person and no one questions this is always an easy way to break audiences into laughter. It is true it Family Guy may not be to everyone's tastes but I do appreciate the simple fact they will say it even if no one else will.
4. The Walking Dead
There are two reason I love this show. Firstly for some reason the idea of zombies does scare me, it is not just a monster it is actually another poor victim. The main reason though is I love how this series truly takes you into the dark aspects of humanity in a world were everything we know and take for granted is just gone. The characters all have the ability to make you laugh and cry as they take you on a treacherous journey soaked in blood. I would say however if you find heave graphic gore something that makes you feel sick this series is not for you. Even with those scenes being few and far between I find myself feeling queasy on the odd occasion.
3. Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
As I mentioned earlier I love how Buffy used metaphors for their monsters and basis for a storyline. But I will not lie, I loved a strong female character who could truly smack down in a fight. The choreography of some of the fights and how the pulled off many of the tricks of filming was pure genius. I also found Willow's realisation of her sexuality and story help myself to come out to my friends and family. I think when a series can have a story which helps the viewers with inner tumoil is easily a show that needs to be recognised.
2. Absolutely Fabulous.
This is a series that never fails to make me laugh. The relationship between the main two characters, Patsy and Eddy, always reminds me of me and my best friend. I still find sequences from this series hilarious despite having seen them hundreds of times. It is not often that you get a series made like this now. The humour is derived more from two completely outrageous characters surrounded by people just as bizarre. From a twitchy geeky daughter to a kleptomaniac Gran you are never short of laughs. I will say the series reached its prime around series 4. Even thou series 5 onwards are still entertaining, the jokes from the first 4 series seem more hilarious some how.
1. Battlestar Galactica (Reimagined series).
I love this series purely for the fact the entire story was well thought out and had a pretty complex multi-layered themes which ran from start to finish. The characters had interesting development and the part that made it perfect was the fact they were not carbon copies of the original characters from the 1970's series. They were their own characters and even saw 1 character seeing a gender swap from the the original to the reimagining. They also nicely linked the reimagined series to the 1970's by having the designs of the Cylons and their ships as how the Cylons appeared during the Human/Cylon War 50 years prior to the start of the series. I would definetly recommend this to anyone who loves a well thought out story and even if Sci-Fi is not your normal genre this is the Sci-Fi that breaks the rules.
