The End of Two Years
To end the two year BTEC course we were assigned with making a short production on anything we wanted. With complete freedom I returned to an idea that occurred to me one day while I was watch Misfits. Media at the moment is filled with superhero franchises and I thought about Wi-Fi and how it is now effectively everywhere, and how we do not know the long-term effects of it on our bodies. This is with so many avenues used to allow characters to achieve superpowers, none to my knowledge have ever used this relatively new piece of technology to give their characters the desired powers.
Pre-Production
Wi-Fi - Are you connected?
Basic Premise.
Wi-Fi is a relatively new piece of technology in the world. Long-term effects of wi-fi on molecules is unknown. In Wi-Fi, members of the public have started to discover they have superpowers due to their cells mutating from the waves put out by a wi-fi connection.
Considerations
With a time constraint of less than 10 minutes I decided to have mine focus on a small part of a much larger story. This in effect would make it a part from a pilot episodes for a potential series.

Wi-Fi - Plot Summary
Running from a mysterious suited pursuer, Jamie and Ali run in desperation to escape the figure after them. Running under a bridge the pair know the pursuer has seen them run under the bridge. In hot pursuit the pursuer continues on the path after the pair, unknown to him Jamie and Ali have outsmarted him by hiding behind a wall that supports the bridge.
Heading in the opposite direction to the pursuer the pair find a location to hide and catch their breath. The pair discuss why the man is after them and it is revealed they both have a secret, they have both been effected by wi-fi. The pair reveal to each other the moment they discovered their powers. Jamie reveals he was in class one day and suddenly knew every answer being asked instinctively for no apparent reason. Thinking nothing of it he returns home to check his usual websites only to see the wi-fi connection at home is down. In his frustration he suddenly starts seeing websites flashing before his eyes. In one day he had gone from an ordinary student to a walking internet connection, able to access all of the internet from any location. Ali discovered her powers by accident also, having overheard some girls across the library saying horrible things about her. The only problem is the girls are nowhere near close enough for Ali to have overheard them. In her confusion and hurt she decided to head home, only to enter the market square and hear all the thoughts from those around her screaming in her mind at the same time.
Jamie and Ali both decide it is safe to venture out from their hiding place and proceed to enter the canteen at their college. They notice a guy across the room being adored by those around him. As a student walks in the eye sight of the guy he commands the student “give me you water”, which prompts the student to hand over his newly bought bottle of water before leaving. Jamie and Ali are both startled to see how the student simply did as he was told, which causes Jamie to speculate this guy may also be like them. He asks Ali to read the guy’s mind, but she cannot instead all she hears are the adoring thoughts of those around him. She reveals to Jamie that she had already tried to read his mind when they first met and couldn’t either. Jamie speculates that their powers may not work on others with powers.

Goals within Wi-Fi.
Primary Goal.
What has happened to cause them to get these powers? While the answer will not be revealed during the FMP as it is a “moment” of a larger story, the question will be clearly started by the two protagonists discussing how they got their powers.
Secondary Goal.
Who was after them? Again while not revealed during the FMP, the agent pursuing them is the driving force behind the protagonists meeting and discovering the both have a power.
Obstacles within Wi-Fi.
Primary Obstacles.
How did they get their powers? With the unknown cause for why some are starting to gain superpowers is the primary question for the protagonists to solve.
Secondary Obstacles.
Being pursued by mysterious agents. The agents acts as a side obstacle for the protagonists to evade. The second question behind them aside from them being after the protagonists is, who are they and who do they work for? Are they good or evil? Are they private or government issued? These questions would be answered further down the story of Wi-Fi and not be answered within the FMP.
Action within Wi-Fi.
The short film starts with action as the protagonists are pursued by the agent. Action scenes will also be contained within the flashback scenes covering the origin or Jamie and Alice’s powers. The final portion of action will be at the end when the antagonist arrives and uses his powers.
Tactics within Wi-Fi.
Primary Stakes.
The agent pursuing the protagonists is the primary source driving the story for the FMP forward. Without his presence Jamie and Alice would not have met and never discovered that others have powers also.
Secondary Stakes.
The primary protagonists are from different backgrounds and social groups. This is to add contrast between the two and demonstrate how differences can work together to make something stronger. Alice also hold a slight fear over her powers as she does not always want to hear the things people are thinking all around her.
Stakes within Wi-Fi.
Primary Stakes.
If their powers are revealed their lives will forever be changed. With both protagonists being used to blending in to the crowd, they both fear their lives would be turned upside down if others found out about their abilities.
Secondary Stakes.
With the agents after them, their freedom itself could be in danger. They are also worried their powers could reveal to them dark secrets that will forever change their views of the world.

The Script
Locations
Having a budget of £0, I decided to use what I had available. Where I needed multiple locations I opted to use a local park which had a bridge with an underpass walkway, my college's common room, library, outside compound and gaming room and for the bedroom I decided to use my own room.

Casting
With an opportunity to present our ideas to the Performing Arts students at the college I pitched my idea and welcomed any that were enthusiastic about the idea. After talking to several I realised many had busy schedules, which concerned me as my shoot would be a busy shoot stretched over two weeks. I opted to use only three from the options available to fill in the roles of characters that would not be required for much filming. This even resulted in me changing the gender of my villain from a male to a female. One of the students was interested in playing my villain and she was very attractive, with my villain having a mind control power I loved the irony of a pretty young woman who could get whatever she wanted.
Brontë Ansell - Michelle Jenkins (Villain)
Courtney Leigh - Terri Bloom (Mean Girl 1)
Devon Dekota - Piper Coombs (Mean Girl 2)
This left me with only my two primary characters, the "Agent" and my mind control victim. After witnessing Sam Stokes in a peer's FMP I asked him if he would like to be my primary male protagonist, which he accepted, and my peer Kelly Turner has always been good in anything she has starred in so she happily took on the role of my female protagonist.
Sam Stokes - Jamie Freeman (Male Hero)
Kelly Turner - Alice "Ali" Judge (Female Hero)
I knew all I needed my mind control victim to do was simple, so I simply needed someone who could act as a good extra. With the college's Student Union President Kieran Coulnutt with plenty of free time on his hands due to finishing all his work was happy to play the role. With luck I has arranged for a friend with a drone to come and capture an areal shot for me, and he fitted the image for the "Agent" and he was happy to play to role.
The "Agent" - Daryn Lotz
Billy Wilson - Kieran Coulnutt

Crew List
I knew I wanted this short to utilise everything I had been taught over the last 18 months, so I was going to use a multi-camera setup on shoots to allow for more shot choices from a single take. I also wanted one camera operator to monitor sound and to have another crew member who's only job was to check sound during filming. I also put myself on the third camera, so while I was filming I could focus more on the directing side on set. I approached peers I had worked with closely, knowing they had the skills I needed for my production. I also wanted to be ambitious and achieve an areal shot. With luck my friend had started shooting promotional videos for local pubs using an areal drone. All to eager for a reason to use his drone he was more than willing to help me with my production.

Production
Production went extremely well, I did have to extend the schedule to an extra day the following week as some cast and crews schedules changed at last minute. However this did not hinder or alter the quality of the production. The only issue was the day we wanted to film to areal shot was a day the weather decided to be unpredictable. However with out persistence and patience we managed to succeed it achieving the shot in a single take.
Post-Production
Editing
I edited the entire short and decided to edit them as scenes first to then composite together once ready. During my editing I started to consider the music I would use for the production and began to lean towards a more digital sounding music to keep with the theme of technology being responsible for these super-powered individuals. I also began to think about the marketing behind the production, from a poster to a trailer.
Music
I was fortunate enough to have a friend who wrote music along the lines of what I wanted for my production. I sat down with him and he played for me some sample pieces based on what I had said to him. I also played for a him a couple of tracks from various shows and movies that had a style I liked but wanted in a more electronic sound. After our discussion he went away and worked on the pieces for me and sent me over a logo to represent his music name for his work, The Thirteenth G.
Marketing
I thought about how I would have my production advertised if it were a television show. I started to consider other shows that were aimed at younger audiences and how they can at times be cryptic in what they are advertising. With mine having a global angle using Wi-Fi I decided to create a trailer that implied it was something of global proportions, but did not completely explain what it was. At this point I considered a bi-line to be attached to the title like shows and movies uses, such as Alien - In space no one can hear you scream. For mine I decided to use the bi-line of "Are you connected?" playing off the fact you connect to Wi-Fi internet connections. I used a combination of free stock footage and original footage to portray my trailer.
The Trailer
I used a digital effect over the voice over to keep it in line with the technology theme behind the idea. I also used a piece of music by The Thirteenth G again to keep the music inline with the music for the final production.
The Poster
For my poster I looked to the matrix for inspiration. Using binary code but in blue for my backdrop to emulate how "Wi-Fi" is typically written in blue. I wanted my poster to be simply, yet effective. So I chose to simply have a blacked out head and shoulders with a "Wi-Fi" symbol in the center on the top of the head. Then in a slightly more purplish blue I simply put the title and the bi-line. The last step was to put a list of all the main names and groups at the bottom to emulate a traditional movie poster. I also decided to put the online name "Neptune's Triton Productions" at the top as it has been an online signature of mine for many years.
I am pleased with my poster as it does play with the eyes as you look at it. This works well as the main character's powers are all mentally based.
Bloopers - Promo
During my editing I found multiple mistakes that showed the fun and relaxed atmosphere that was on set. I thought this would be a good short 2 minute long video to help advertise the production further but still keep the plot a secret.
Finishing the Editing
Once all the music was received I began to edit the scenes together with the music. I faded the music across scenes to allow the production to have a more professional feel to it, along with soundbites from one scene to the next. I used filters such a "Ghost" to achieve the effect when my male protagonist gained his powers, along with effects such a reverb and echo on the two female character's powers.
The Final Production
Evaluation
With a budget of £0, all-in-all I am pleased with the final product of all the hard work. There are some aspects I would have done bigger and better if I had to financial backing, but working with what I had available I believe worked well. If I could I would have had a rotating camera shot of Kelly during the moment she collapses in Alice's flashback sequences. I would have also employed special effects similar to when Kurtis travels through time in Misfits when portraying Jamie's powers, as original I envisioned the websites flickering over his eye to represent him seeing them in his mind. As much as I tried, I could not achieve the desired effect through editing techniques alone. The final scene I should have had camera two positioned slightly better so Kelly's face could be seen clearly as she is talking. But aside from these major points, the other aspects I would change would be minor and would not alter massively the final production.
